U.S. stock market closure for Martin Luther King Jr. day and 2025 holiday schedule

Highlight of the story: U.S. stock markets, including the Nasdaq and NYSE, will close on Jan. 20 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday established in 1983. Bond markets will also close. Markets reopen on Jan. 21 and close again for Presidents Day on Feb. 17. Additional 2025 closures include Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
U.S. stock markets will be closed on Monday, Jan. 20, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This federal holiday, honoring civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was established when President Ronald Reagan signed the King Holiday Bill into law on Nov. 2, 1983. The third Monday in January was designated as the official day of observance, according to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.Both the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange will close for the holiday and will reopen for regular trading hours on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
