A Minecraft Movie has exceeded expectations, grossing $301 million globally in its debut and significantly reducing Hollywood's box office deficit. The film's success, driven by its universal appeal and strong marketing, marks the biggest opening of 2025 and the highest-grossing debut for a video game adaptation, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
In a year that has seen its fair share of box-office struggles, Hollywood found a much-needed relief with the surprise success of A Minecraft Movie. This much-anticipated film surpassed expectations, dramatically narrowing the industry's box office deficit. In its opening weekend, the movie shattered records and set a new benchmark for video game adaptations.
The film earned a staggering $157 million in its first few days in theaters across the U.S. and Canada, according to studio estimates. International ticket sales added another $144 million, bringing its global debut to an impressive $301 million. As spring break continues across schools, the movie is poised to continue its box office dominance.
Pamela Abdy, co-chair and CEO of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, shared her excitement: “We’re just thrilled that audiences are responding and that everyone’s going to the theater.”
Not only did A Minecraft Movie deliver Hollywood’s biggest opening of 2025, but it also claimed the title for the highest-grossing debut for a video game-based film, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s opening weekend total of $146 million. Analysts initially predicted Minecraft would gross around $80 million, but the final number nearly doubled that projection.
Michael DeLuca, also co-chair and CEO of Warner Bros., attributed the film's success to its universal appeal. “You can’t underestimate the value of earnest, entertaining, joyous cinema. People really want an escape, especially when it involves the whole family,” he said.
The success of A Minecraft Movie comes at a time when Hollywood has faced several disappointing releases in 2025, with films like Snow White and Mickey 17 underperforming. However, the video game adaptation genre has seen notable successes in recent years, including The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Five Nights at Freddy's. According to Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore, "Video games were once a genre that had very mixed results at the box office, but the code has finally been cracked."
“A Minecraft Movie” is directed by Jared Hess, known for Napoleon Dynamite, and produced by Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. The film, which had a reported production cost of $150 million, brings together an ensemble cast led by Jack Black and Jason Momoa. Their characters are transported into the “Overworld,” a fictional realm where they must embark on a silly yet perilous adventure to find their way home.
Critics had a mixed response to the film, but audiences seemed to embrace it with enthusiasm. The movie scored a solid B+ on CinemaScore and earned a 4/5 rating in PostTrak exit polls. The film also drew a particularly youthful audience, with 64% of ticket buyers under the age of 25 and men making up about 62% of the audience.
Warner Bros. aggressively marketed the film, opening it in 4,263 locations domestically and on 36,000 screens internationally. Dergarabedian noted the film’s success as a "perfect small screen to big screen alliance," adding, “Younger audiences love going to the movie theater, believe it or not.”
The success of A Minecraft Movie has given Hollywood a much-needed boost as the summer movie season approaches. Before the release of the film, the box office was facing a 13% deficit compared to last year. After this weekend, the gap has narrowed to just 5%.
As for the rest of the box office, second place went to the Jason Statham action film A Working Man, which earned $7.3 million in its second weekend. The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 2, which made $7 million, took third place. Meanwhile, Snow White slid to fourth, grossing $6.1 million in its third week of release, bringing its global total to over $168 million.
This weekend's numbers show just how quickly a single success can change the course of the industry, especially as Hollywood braces for the busy summer season. The excitement surrounding A Minecraft Movie suggests that audiences are still eager for big-screen entertainment, especially when it taps into beloved franchises.
With this surge in box office numbers, it's clear that Hollywood is far from out of the game, and A Minecraft Movie may be just the beginning of a more prosperous year ahead.
