Lauren Sánchez, from local news to space traveler, has had a remarkable career. She transitioned from broadcasting on shows like Extra to founding Black Ops Aviation. In 2025, Sánchez flew to space on Blue Origin's NS-31 mission, advocating environmental responsibility. Vice chair of the Bezos Earth Fund, she supports climate change initiatives.

Born in 1969 in New Mexico and raised in California, Sánchez’s path from local news reporter to space traveler and philanthropist has been marked by a diverse and high-profile career. Early in her academic journey, Sánchez attended El Camino College before transferring to the University of Southern California, where she studied communications. According to USC records, she was known at the time as Wendy Sánchez.

From Broadcast Journalism to Entertainment

Sánchez began her broadcasting career at KTVK-TV in Phoenix before gaining national attention on shows like Extra and Good Day LA. She also served as the original host of Fox’s dance competition series So You Think You Can Dance.

By age 40, inspired by her father—a flight instructor—Sánchez earned her helicopter pilot’s license. In 2016, she founded Black Ops Aviation, recognized as the first female-owned aerial film production company in the United States. According to The Hollywood Reporter, her company worked on projects including Christopher Nolan’s 2017 film Dunkirk.

“I had my job, I had a career, and then I found a calling,” Sánchez said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, describing how her love of entertainment and aviation converged.

Spaceflight and Philanthropy

In 2025, Sánchez became one of six female passengers aboard Blue Origin’s NS-31 mission, a 10-minute suborbital flight to the edge of space. The mission, organized by Bezos’ private aerospace company, featured prominent figures including journalist Gayle King, pop singer Katy Perry, and activist Amanda Nguyen.

According to Blue Origin, Sánchez played a key role in assembling the all-female crew and worked with fashion brand Monse to design custom flight suits for the mission. Reflecting on the experience, she described viewing Earth from space as “unexpectedly peaceful.”

“Earth looked so— it was so quiet,” she told reporters following the mission. “And you look at it, and you’re like, ‘We’re all in this together.’”

In addition to her aviation pursuits, Sánchez serves as vice chair of the Bezos Earth Fund, a philanthropic organization focused on combating climate change, protecting nature, and supporting early childhood education and housing initiatives.

Author and Advocate

Expanding her outreach to younger audiences, Sánchez published a bilingual children’s book in 2024 titled The Fly Who Flew to Space. The book follows a character named Flynn, a fly who embarks on a space adventure and returns with a renewed sense of environmental responsibility. Sánchez told People magazine that the story serves as “a metaphor for curiosity and the pursuit of dreams.”

Personal Life and Relationship with Bezos

Sánchez is a mother of three. She shares a son, Nikko, with former NFL player Tony Gonzalez, and two children—son Evan and daughter Ella—with ex-husband Patrick Whitesell, a prominent entertainment executive. In a 2023 interview with The Wall Street Journal, Sánchez described her relationship with Gonzalez and his wife as close, calling them her “best friends.”

Her relationship with Bezos, 61, became public in early 2019 following his divorce from MacKenzie Scott, his wife of 25 years. The couple announced their engagement in May 2023.

Earlier this year, Sánchez accompanied Bezos to the U.S. presidential inauguration in Washington, D.C., where the couple was seated alongside tech leaders Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg.

As the couple’s wedding approaches, Sánchez continues to balance her roles as a media personality, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and space explorer—cementing her place in the public eye well beyond her upcoming nuptials.
