Netflix's 'The Electric State' has sparked a divide between critics and audiences, with critics rating it at 14% and audiences at 76%. The film's $320 million budget raises questions about its worth, despite its visual flair. Starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, the movie's long-term success remains uncertain, but it currently tops Netflix's charts.
This kind of split is nothing new for Netflix. The platform has seen similar patterns with past releases. Red Notice, featuring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot, became the most-watched Netflix film in history despite its unimpressive 37% critic rating. Meanwhile, The Gray Man, another Russo Brothers project, scored 45% with critics but soared to 90% among audiences. There are even cases where the inverse happens, such as with Carry-On, which received an impressive 87% from critics but a disappointing 51% from viewers.

Early Signs of Success—or Just a Hype Bubble?
Despite its strong start, the critical backlash could hurt The Electric State in the long run. Whether it will be remembered as a misunderstood hit or a costly misstep remains to be seen. One thing is certain: Netflix’s willingness to take massive financial risks continues to spark debate in the entertainment industry.
