Netflix's 'The Electric State' has sparked a divide between critics and audiences, with critics rating it at 14% and audiences at 76%. The film's $320 million budget raises questions about its worth, despite its visual flair. Starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, the movie's long-term success remains uncertain, but it currently tops Netflix's charts.

Netflix has once again found itself at the center of a familiar controversy: a dramatic divide between critical reviews and audience reception. The Electric State, the latest high-budget sci-fi adventure from the Russo Brothers, has received an abysmal 14% rating from critics—a score lower than even Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon movies. However, general audiences have responded far more favorably, with the film currently holding a 76% audience rating.

This kind of split is nothing new for Netflix. The platform has seen similar patterns with past releases. Red Notice, featuring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot, became the most-watched Netflix film in history despite its unimpressive 37% critic rating. Meanwhile, The Gray Man, another Russo Brothers project, scored 45% with critics but soared to 90% among audiences. There are even cases where the inverse happens, such as with Carry-On, which received an impressive 87% from critics but a disappointing 51% from viewers.

A Blockbuster Budget Under Scrutiny

One of the most intriguing aspects of The Electric State is its staggering $320 million budget, making it one of the most expensive films ever made. While Netflix is known for investing heavily in its original content, many are questioning whether the movie justifies such an extravagant price tag. The CGI-heavy production certainly has visual flair, but some viewers and critics argue that the on-screen result does not fully reflect its massive budget.

Netflix’s High-Stakes Gamble

With a price tag this steep, Netflix undoubtedly expects The Electric State to perform exceptionally well on its platform. While streaming services don’t rely on box office numbers, success is measured by viewership milestones, particularly placement on Netflix’s all-time Top 10 list. If the film joins the ranks of previous Netflix blockbusters like Don’t Look Up (starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence) or Leave the World Behind (with Julia Roberts), it would justify the investment. With Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt leading the cast, Netflix clearly hopes this star power will drive engagement.

Early Signs of Success—or Just a Hype Bubble?

For now, it’s too early to determine The Electric State’s long-term success. The film currently sits at #1 on Netflix’s Top 10 movies list, but that’s hardly surprising given the anticipation surrounding its release. Similar trends can be seen on the TV side, where Adolescence is dominating the charts. However, real success will be measured by how well the film sustains its popularity in the coming weeks.

Despite its strong start, the critical backlash could hurt The Electric State in the long run. Whether it will be remembered as a misunderstood hit or a costly misstep remains to be seen. One thing is certain: Netflix’s willingness to take massive financial risks continues to spark debate in the entertainment industry.
