Tom Cruise is set to premiere *Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning* at the Cannes Film Festival on May 14. This marks Cruise's second Cannes appearance in three years, with director Christopher McQuarrie joining him. The film, potentially the final installment in the franchise, promises high-stakes action and the return of familiar faces alongside new cast members.
On Tuesday, the Cannes Film Festival announced that Cruise will premiere the highly anticipated Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning at this year’s festival. The action-packed blockbuster will screen out of competition on May 14, the second night of the festival, with Cruise and longtime director Christopher McQuarrie in attendance.
This marks Cruise’s second Cannes appearance in three years and only his third overall. He last hit the Croisette in 2022 for the premiere of Top Gun: Maverick, where he also received an honorary Palme d’Or. Before that, his first Cannes showing was in 1992 for Far and Away.
The full 2025 Cannes lineup is expected to be revealed on Thursday, April 10, with French actress Juliette Binoche presiding over this year’s jury.
The Final Reckoning is the eighth and potentially final installment in the long-running spy franchise, which began in 1996. Picking up from 2023’s Dead Reckoning, the new film sees Ethan Hunt and his IMF team once again racing to stop the mysterious villain Gabriel (Esai Morales) and a rogue artificial intelligence bent on destruction. The film’s trailer, released April 7, teased world-threatening stakes with the line: “the fate of every living soul is at risk.”
Cruise is, of course, in full daredevil mode, shown clinging to an airplane mid-flight and diving off an aircraft carrier into the ocean.
Alongside Cruise, fan favorites Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg return as Luther Stickell and Benji Dunn, while Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, and Henry Czerny also reprise their roles from the previous installment. Newcomers include Hannah Waddingham, Nick Offerman, and Tramell Tillman, adding fresh intrigue to the ensemble.
Cruise and McQuarrie made a recent appearance at CinemaCon 2025, where they showcased footage from the film and McQuarrie received a career honor, signaling the official start of the global promotional tour.
With the world premiere set for Cannes and the film releasing shortly after on May 23, The Final Reckoning is shaping up to be one of the biggest cinematic events of the summer. Whether this marks the end of Ethan Hunt’s journey or not, one thing is certain: Tom Cruise is going out with a bang.
The Cannes Film Festival runs from May 13 to May 24.
