For coffee lovers and football fans alike, the day after the Super Bowl is shaping up to be a little more bearable—thanks to Starbucks. The coffee giant is offering a free brewed coffee to its rewards members on February 10, marking a rare promotional event under the company’s evolving customer engagement strategy.

A one-day-only perk

Starbucks Rewards members in the U.S. can redeem a free 12-ounce tall brewed hot or iced coffee on Monday following the big game. The process is simple: members need to apply the Starbucks Monday coupon in the app before placing an order using the order-ahead feature. For those ordering in-store or at the drive-thru, mentioning the Starbucks Monday coupon to the barista will also secure the freebie.

New customers who aren’t currently part of the Starbucks Rewards program can still take advantage of the deal. By signing up for Starbucks Rewards by 11:59 p.m. PT on February 9, they will receive the Starbucks Monday coupon in their app. Even those who miss the deadline can still get their free coffee by requesting it directly from their barista on February 10.

Shifting promotional tactics under new leadership

While Starbucks has a history of rolling out promotions and discounts, recent months have signaled a shift in strategy. In October, Starbucks announced plans to scale back its frequent discounts, aiming instead to emphasize a more traditional "community coffeehouse" experience under new CEO Brian Niccol.

This Super Bowl promotion stands out as a rare exception, indicating that while Starbucks is reducing widespread promotional offers, it still values high-impact, targeted engagement strategies. By limiting giveaways to Starbucks Rewards members (or those willing to sign up), the company encourages long-term customer loyalty rather than one-time transactions.

More perks for customers

The free post-game coffee offer isn’t the only recent initiative designed to keep customers engaged. In January, Starbucks extended its free refill policy, allowing customers who purchase a drink "for here" to get free refills of hot brewed or iced coffee, or hot or iced tea. These refills are available as long as customers remain in the café, using either ceramic mugs or their personal cups.

Another noteworthy move was the return of the beloved condiment bar, which lets customers customize their drinks with sweeteners and milk options. This change reflects Starbucks' desire to bring back an element of personalization that had been reduced in recent years.

Valentine’s day specials add to the buzz

In addition to its post-Super Bowl offer, Starbucks recently launched its Valentine’s Day menu on February 3. The lineup includes the limited-time Blackberry Sage Refreshers, the Chocolate Hazelnut Cookie Cold Brew, and the Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Frappuccino, giving customers another reason to visit in the coming weeks.

With strategic giveaways like the Super Bowl Monday coffee promo and a growing focus on in-store experience, Starbucks is finding new ways to retain customers while reinforcing its brand as a welcoming and engaging coffee destination.
