Highlight of the story: Los Angeles Dodgers made roster changes. Max Muncy is back from injury. Tommy Edman is now on the injured list due to an ankle issue. Muncy played against the St. Louis Cardinals. Edman's return timeline is unclear. Kiké Hernández is still recovering. Hyeseong Kim and Tanner Scott are nearing their returns. Roki Sasaki might start a rehab assignment soon.

The Los Angeles Dodgers activated third baseman Max Muncy from the injured list on Monday, just as fellow infielder Tommy Edman was placed on the shelf with a recurring ankle injury. The roster moves continue a season of frequent adjustments for the National League West leaders, who are managing a growing list of injuries during a critical stretch of the season.

Muncy returned to the Dodgers’ lineup Monday night at Dodger Stadium, batting fifth and playing third base as Los Angeles opened a homestand against the St. Louis Cardinals. The 33-year-old slugger had been sidelined since July 2 due to a bone bruise in his left knee sustained during a collision on a tag play against the Chicago White Sox.

Despite an initial six-week recovery projection, Muncy returned after missing just under five weeks.

“He’s put in a lot of work to get back with this timeline,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters. “Getting him back lengthens and strengthens our lineup.”

At the time of his injury, Muncy had been performing well, posting a .832 OPS with 13 home runs and 55 RBIs over the first half of the season.

In contrast, Edman is headed to the injured list for the second time this season after aggravating a right ankle injury during Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays. The versatile infielder had previously left a game in Boston with similar ankle discomfort. Roberts described the issue as a “ligament strain” and indicated there is no clear timetable for Edman’s return.

“We don’t know how long it’s going to be, but I do think he’ll be back at some point,” Roberts said. “The main thing is when he gets back, how we can make sure that this doesn’t happen again.”

Edman, last year’s National League Championship Series MVP, is batting .228 with 12 home runs and 44 RBIs this season.

His absence adds to an already lengthy list of Dodgers dealing with injuries. Utilityman Kiké Hernández remains out with a sprained left elbow and has undergone multiple treatments, including platelet-rich plasma injections and cortisone shots. Though Roberts expressed hope, he acknowledged the team is not yet “at the point of worrying the season is lost” for Hernández.

There are signs of progress elsewhere on the roster. Second baseman Hyeseong Kim, sidelined with left shoulder bursitis, is swinging a bat and fielding grounders. He could return as soon as this weekend. Left-handed reliever Tanner Scott is also nearing a return, with another batting practice session scheduled soon as he recovers from elbow inflammation.

Meanwhile, rookie right-hander Roki Sasaki remains on the injured list but is expected to throw three live innings Friday. Sasaki, who has been out since May 8 with a right shoulder injury, showed promising velocity in recent sessions and may begin a minor league rehab assignment next week, according to Roberts.

The Dodgers, defending World Series champions, opted against making major acquisitions at last week’s trade deadline, signaling confidence in their current roster. The front office appears focused on regaining full health ahead of a potential postseason run.

“We believe in the group we have,” Roberts said. “Getting everyone back healthy is the most important move we can make.”
