The 2025 Major League Baseball season is surprisingly competitive. Eight teams, including the Tigers, Padres, and Mets, have held the best record since May. The Dodgers, despite high expectations, face injuries and inconsistency. The Tigers lead the American League Central. Recent games feature remarkable moments, like Liover Peguero's three home runs.
In a season widely expected to be dominated by the Los Angeles Dodgers, the 2025 Major League Baseball campaign has instead turned into one of the most unpredictable in recent history, with eight different teams holding the best record in the majors at some point since May 1.

Despite high expectations, the Dodgers—reigning World Series champions and offseason spenders who added star pitchers Blake Snell and Roki Sasaki—have not run away with the league. Instead, parity has ruled the standings, with teams including the Tigers, Padres, Mets, Phillies, Cubs, Brewers, and Blue Jays each taking their turn atop the league.

According to Sportradar, this marks only the fifth time since MLB’s expansion era began in 1961 that eight or more teams have led or tied for the best record after May 1. The only other instances occurred in 1963, 1982, 2020, and 2021.

The top spot has changed hands frequently. No team has led the league by more than three games at any point—an advantage briefly held by the Detroit Tigers in early July. The competitive nature of the standings is underscored by the day-by-day shifts at the top. Since July 1 alone, five different teams have led the majors in winning percentage.

While MLB does not award a formal trophy for regular-season success, the symbolic importance of leading the standings reflects overall team strength and can impact playoff seeding, particularly for home-field advantage.

Los Angeles began the year strong with an eight-game winning streak but has since battled injuries and inconsistency. As of late July, the Dodgers’ .580 winning percentage would mark their lowest season-end figure since 2018. At one point in June, they had 14 pitchers on the injured list.

The Tigers, a surprise contender, have spent the most time atop the standings and continue to lead the American League Central. Meanwhile, the Brewers, Cubs, and Blue Jays have made midseason surges, keeping the race tight heading into August.

Adding to the season’s unpredictability, recent games have delivered remarkable moments. On Saturday, Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Liover Peguero hit three home runs in an 8-5 loss to the Colorado Rockies. A day earlier, the Pirates squandered a 16-10 lead, losing 17-16 after the Rockies rallied with seven runs in the final two innings—marking the only instance this season of a team winning after trailing by nine runs.

That victory helped the struggling Rockies, who improved to 30-81, as they attempt to avoid breaking the modern record for most losses in a season—set last year by the 41-121 Chicago White Sox.

Historically, only a handful of current franchises have never finished with MLB’s best regular-season record. The Rays, Diamondbacks, Marlins, Rockies, Blue Jays, Padres, and Rangers remain without that distinction. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Twins hold the longest active drought among teams that have achieved it, last doing so in 1965.

With just over two months remaining in the regular season, the race for the league’s top record remains wide open—offering fans a rare and compelling sense of uncertainty as October approaches.
