The San Antonio Spurs have locked in De'Aaron Fox with a massive four-year, $228 million extension, solidifying his role alongside Victor Wembanyama. Fox, acquired last season from Sacramento, averaged 19.7 points in his brief Spurs stint. Despite a season-ending injury, the Spurs are banking on Fox's dynamic playmaking to spearhead their resurgence.
The San Antonio Spurs and guard De’Aaron Fox have agreed to a four-year, $228 million maximum contract extension, a person familiar with the terms told The Associated Press on Monday. The deal positions Fox as a foundational piece alongside rising star Victor Wembanyama as the franchise looks to return to championship contention.
The Spurs confirmed the signing but did not disclose financial details. A source with direct knowledge of the contract provided the terms to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team has not publicly released them. The extension will begin in the 2026–27 season, following the expiration of Fox’s current five-year, $163 million contract.
“Just being able to be part of an organization like this ... you come in here and you feel that. You feel that in the environment. You feel that in the fans,” Fox said in a statement shared by the team. “And then you go into the practice facility or you go into the arena and you see those banners hanging ... there's nothing you can do besides try to build on that.”
Fox, 26, joined San Antonio in a blockbuster trade from the Sacramento Kings at last season’s deadline. He averaged 19.7 points and 6.8 assists in 17 games with the Spurs before undergoing season-ending surgery to repair the extensor tendon in his left pinky finger. The injury caused him to miss the final 18 games.
Despite the setback, Spurs management remained confident in Fox’s long-term value. The eighth-year veteran holds career averages of 21.5 points and 6.1 assists per game, establishing himself as one of the league’s most dynamic two-way guards.
“What’ll be different going forward is fans will see me play with 10 fingers,” Fox joked during media availability.
Fox’s arrival and subsequent extension mark a significant step in the Spurs’ rebuilding process, centered around 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama. San Antonio is aiming to reestablish its place among the league’s elite after several rebuilding seasons following the retirement of franchise legends Tim Duncan, Manu Ginóbili, and Tony Parker.
The extension is one of the richest in franchise history and underscores San Antonio’s commitment to building a competitive roster around its young core.
ESPN was the first to report the terms of the agreement.
