Highlight of the story: Justin Fields, the Jets quarterback, got injured during training. He hurt his toe and needed a cart to leave the field. The incident happened during team practice. Coach Aaron Glenn thinks someone stepped on Fields' foot. Tyrod Taylor, the backup, took over practice. The Jets might look for another quarterback if Fields is out for long.

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields was carted off the practice field Thursday morning after sustaining a toe injury to his right foot during the team’s second day of training camp.

The injury occurred during team drills when Fields, attempting a pass to tight end Jeremy Ruckert, fell to the ground and remained seated for several moments. He was eventually helped to the sideline by a team trainer and evaluated in the medical tent before being transported via cart to the training facility. Fields exited the cart under his power but did not return to practice.

Head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters the injury appeared to involve Fields’ right foot and may have occurred when a teammate accidentally stepped on him. "It looked like he got stepped on during the play,” Glenn said. “We’ll review the tape and get a clearer picture, but we won’t know more until we get the results from medical.”

Fields, 25, signed a two-year, $40 million contract with the Jets in March after a one-season stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is expected to be the team’s starting quarterback this season, leading a revamped offense under new leadership.

Following the injury, Glenn halted team drills and shifted the focus to special teams while medical staff attended to Fields. Veteran backup Tyrod Taylor, entering his second season with the Jets, took over first-team reps for the remainder of practice.

The Jets’ current quarterback depth includes Taylor, 2024 United Football League MVP Adrian Martinez, and undrafted rookie Brady Cook. Neither Martinez nor Cook has appeared in an NFL regular-season game.

Should Fields miss significant time, New York may explore external quarterback options. The Jets, who finished 7-10 last season, are seeking stability at the quarterback position after a series of injuries and inconsistent play in recent years.

Further updates on Fields’ condition are expected after medical evaluation results are available.
