Pope Francis
Pope Francis, 88, is set to be discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Sunday after recovering from double pneumonia. He will return to Vatican City for a two-month convalescence. While his condition has improved, he will require ongoing therapy and rest. Despite his illness, the pontiff has continued some of his duties, including approving sainthood candidates.
Pope Francis was admitted to Gemelli Hospital on February 14 with a respiratory tract infection, later diagnosed as double pneumonia. His condition was initially serious, with multiple breathing crises, but by March 10, doctors confirmed he was no longer in immediate danger. Over the past two weeks, his health has steadily improved, allowing for a "protected discharge."

Recovery plan and activity limitations

Upon his return to Vatican City, the pope will reside at Casa Santa Marta and follow a two-month recovery plan, including respiratory and physical therapy. Doctors have advised against public engagements, casting doubt over scheduled meetings, including an audience with King Charles and Queen Camilla on April 8.

Limited public presence but ongoing leadership

Though he will not meet large groups immediately, Pope Francis is expected to appear at his hospital window on Sunday to bless the public. Despite his illness, he has continued to oversee Vatican affairs, including approving candidates for sainthood and advocating for global peace and disarmament through written messages.

Resignation speculation dismissed

Francis’ ongoing health issues have reignited discussions about a possible resignation, as he has previously stated he would step down if he could no longer fulfill his duties. However, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin recently dismissed these speculations, affirming the pope remains committed to leading the Church.
