Thousands of Americans are preparing to take to the streets this Independence Day for a series of protests known as "Free America Weekend." Led primarily by the Women’s March and various grassroots organizations, these events are set to oppose former President Donald Trump’s policies and what organizers describe as abuses of power.

The protests are scheduled to take place across all 50 states on and around July 4th. Organizers aim to unify participants in demanding the protection of civil liberties and opposing policies they view as harmful to democracy. This wave of demonstrations follows other nationwide protests coordinated by the 50501 Movement—“50 protests, 50 states, one movement”—which has been active since Trump returned to office earlier this year.

The Women’s March has encouraged communities to organize a variety of activities including rallies, marches, block parties, street parades, art builds, and more. On their website, the group stated, “They want us to feel alone, scared, and divided. They want us to have no dreams of freedom. However, that is precisely what we must do. This Fourth of July, we will be in the streets with songs of freedom and joy.”

Events planned over the holiday weekend vary widely by location. In Montgomery, Alabama, a food and school supply drive will be held at NewSouth Bookstore. Los Angeles will see a Free America Weekend event in the Los Feliz neighborhood, while Miami will host a Reclaim Freedom Rally at the Torch of Friendship. Chicago’s protest, called People’s Independence Day, will take place at Federal Plaza. Trenton, New Jersey, will hold an evening protest at The Plaza. Seattle will feature a “Queen Anne Resist” demonstration on West Dravus Street Overpass, and Houston will host its event at City Hall.

Other activities include candlelight vigils, interfaith picnics, community cookouts, and bridge occupations designed to foster solidarity and emphasize the ongoing fight for civil rights.

Local chapters of groups such as Indivisible have also scheduled related demonstrations, including a “No Kings 2.0” protest on July 4 and a nationwide “Good Trouble Lives On” event planned for July 17, reflecting continuing opposition to policies perceived as assaults on civil and human rights.

The protests represent a significant moment of activism as communities across the country mobilize to voice their demands for freedom, unity, and accountability.
