In a thrilling showdown on June 24, 2025, Zohran Mamdani emerged triumphant in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary, besting Andrew Cuomo and a formidable lineup of rivals.
Zohran Mamdani won the NYC Democratic mayoral primary on June 24, 2025, defeating Andrew Cuomo and other candidates after a tight race. The primary also included races for public advocate, city comptroller, district attorneys, and city council members. New York City Democrats chose Mamdani after polls showed him closing the gap with Cuomo, who had been the frontrunner for months.
The Democratic primary election determined who would be on the ticket in November for the next mayor of New York City. Andrew Cuomo and Zohran Mamdani were the leading candidates in the race.
Cuomo, the former governor of New York, entered the race in March. He had been the frontrunner in every poll for months.
However, the latest poll released just before Primary Day indicated Mamdani had closed the gap and potentially held a slight lead.
Nine candidates were running in total.
Other candidates included Brad Lander, Scott Stringer, Adrienne Adams, Michael Blake, Zellnor Myrie, Jessica Ramos and Whitney Tilson.
Dr. Selma Bartholomew and Paperboy Love Prince were also candidates.
New York City Democrats had to decide between giving Andrew Cuomo another chance, boosting Zohran Mamdani, or giving a potentially less-polarizing candidate a chance.
The decision was fairly clear as they went with Mamdani.
That was not the only primary being decided.
New Yorkers also voted for Republicans and Democrats in the races for public advocate, city comptroller, district attorneys and city council members.
Anthony Weiner is among the latter running.
