In a surprising turn of events, Zohran Mamdani triumphed in the Democratic mayoral primary of New York City, with voter participation hitting new heights compared to 2021. The elections for comptroller and borough presidents also wrapped up, setting the stage for a dynamic political landscape.
Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani won the New York City Democratic primary for mayor, according to former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday night, in a primary election that saw a higher turnout than in 2021, with CBS News estimating 1.1 million voters participating, while other races, including those for comptroller, public advocate, district attorney, and borough presidents, were also decided, with the general election shaping up to be unique due to incumbent Mayor Eric Adams running as an independent. The results are preliminary and won't be official until all votes, including mail-in ballots, are counted, a process that could take a week or more.

Cuomo stated, \"I want to look at all the numbers as they come in and analyze the rank choice voting. I will then consult with my colleagues on what is the best path for me to help the City of New York, as I have already qualified to run for mayor on an independent line in November.\"

Mamdani addressed his supporters, saying, \"Tonight, we made history. In the words of Nelson Mandela, 'It always seems impossible until it is done.' My friends, we have done it. I will be your Democratic nominee for the mayor of New York City.\"

The New York City primary elections included races for several key positions. Voters cast their ballots for New York City comptroller, Manhattan district attorney, and borough presidents in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx.

The city uses ranked choice voting to avoid a runoff election. Voters rank candidates in order of preference. The candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated. Voters who ranked that candidate as their first choice have their second choices counted. This process continues until a candidate exceeds 50% of the vote. The winner is considered presumptive until the vote totals are officially certified.

The Republican side of the mayoral race features Curtis Sliwa, who is running uncontested. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams is running as an independent in the November 4 general election. The Working Families Party is also likely to field a candidate.

The general election is anticipated to be unlike any in recent memory.

There was also a primary election for the GOP candidate for comptroller.

Gonzalo Duran is running uncontested in the Republican primary for public advocate.

Maud Maron is running uncontested in the Republican primary for Manhattan district attorney.

Separately, incumbent Eric Gonzalez is running uncontested in the Democratic primary for Brooklyn district attorney.

Seson Adams is running uncontested as the Republican candidate for Manhattan borough president.

Janine Acquafredda is running uncontested as the Republican candidate for Brooklyn borough president.

Grace Marrero is running uncontested as the Republican candidate for Bronx borough president.

Incumbent Donovan Richards is running in an uncontested Democratic primary race for Queens borough president. Henry Ikezi is running uncontested for the Republicans.

Incumbent Vito Fosella is running in an uncontested Republican primary race for Staten Island borough president. He'll face Michael Colombo, who's running uncontested in the Democratic primary race.

CBS News estimates that 1.1 million voters participated in the primary. This represents more than a third of registered Democrats in the city. The turnout is noticeably higher than the 2021 primary.

The official certification of the results could take weeks. This is due to the need to count all votes, including mail-in ballots.
